With the warmer weather finally here, it’s the perfect time to take the kids to Greenville and explore the Saturday Market and the zoo.

Pick a Saturday, head downtown and explore what the market and zoo have to offer. Then, take the kids out for a nice, juicy hamburger.

TD Saturday Market

Start your day here. We love walking among the throngs of people at the TD Saturday Market in downtown Greenville. There are several mainstay vendors that we love to visit. Shrimp and grits for breakfast is a must at the Soby’s cart. Pick up some farm-fresh, locally grown vegetables and herbs, pasta, meat, and cheeses.

No pets are allowed. A stroller or wagon is a good idea for little ones. If you have a child who gets anxious in crowds, wait until around 11 a.m. when the crowds have thinned out some.

Lions and more

Even if you’ve been to the Greenville Zoo before, a lot has changed there recently. The elephants are gone, but there’s a new baby giraffe and a whole new way to experience a tour of the animal exhibits with a new interactive app.

Before you go, download the interactive app for your Apple or Android smartphone. Use the app before you visit to plan your trip, and use it during your visit to chart your course.

Check out the calendar of events for special tours and activities to make the most of your visit. The Greenville Zoo also hosts summer camps for kids ages 6 – 12. All of the walking paths are paved, but there are some hilly areas.

Time to eat

American Roadside is a casual burgers-and-shakes joint in the downtown Greenville area. They have a large outdoor seating area, perfect for nice days.

The food is really good, and the portions aren’t skimpy.

It’s a little on the spendy side (compared to fast food) and the service can be a bit slow, but the burgers are worth the wait.

The kids got milk shakes, which were comparable to their favorites from another local fast-food spot. It’s hard to find a burger joint that gives much thought to salads, but American Roadside is an exception — their Raspberry Fields salad is really good.

They also serve hot dogs and chicken sandwiches.
