The Halloween season seems to get bigger (and longer) and longer every year. The house decorations get more elaborate and sophisticated, the costumes are flashier, and the bags of candy … well, let’s just say buying the large party bags in advance are a very bad thing in this house. While the adults have been trying to steal the thunder for years from the little ones, this is a children’s holiday.

With all of the seasonal products that roll out every year, it should be no surprise that there are also Halloween apps as well. Children can decorate a whole town, listen to ghost stories and even turn their selfies into zombies (OK, maybe that one isn’t for the kids). In honor of the holiday, here are five applications that might inspire the imagination of your little ones.

Halloween City

Imagine being able to decorate an entire town for Halloween. Well, the people at Tap Pocket have made it possible with this app. There are numerous characters, haunted houses and all sorts of treasures to explore. There is a tutorial to get everyone started on hours of fun. It is rated as acceptable for all ages but does have some fantasy-like violence. Be warned: this app does have advertisements and in-app purchases. FinBlade has combined beautiful imagery and spooky sound effects with the chance for children to polish up their vocabulary skills. With holiday themed word lists, your little super hero can earn points to move to upper levels by finding all of the words in the puzzle. The app has a 9+ rating due to the elementary level words and potentially scary themes.

Halloween Booth 2017

The days of plain photos are over! It’s just not allowed anymore. You must have a filter, graphic or something added; it’s practically the law. Well, now you can dress up your photos of all the cute little ones with this app from UAB Target Works. You can edit your photos in the app and give it just the right flair for the occasion. This application does have in-app purchases, so be aware of that.

The Very Hungry Pumpkin

Even the pumpkins want some candy. In this game developed by Entertaining Games Inc., you control a pumpkin as a group pumpkins try to get the treats without running into others. The 3D graphics help the game come alive for your little ones, and it will keep them interested for hours.

Doctor Bubble Halloween

Once upon a time, there was a young man, who may or may not have spent his Friday afternoons at a local watering hole with half price beverages and an addicting game called Puzzle Bubble. That same man might have had a flashback when he saw this bubble shooter. Created by Magma Mobile, this game is rated E for everyone and has the potential to make your free time disappear (don’t say you haven’t been warned). In this game you attempt to shoot colored bubbles at other matching bubbles on the ceiling. The game gets more difficult as you clear levels, and the whole family can play it.

So as you prepare to fulfill your annual parent duty of “checking the candy” complete with a 10 percent service charge, keep the kids occupied with one of these apps. Maybe they won’t notice that you swiped all the Twix bars.

Have a great Halloween and be safe out there!
