A loaded pistol was found in the backpack of a sixth grade student at Woodmont Middle School after Greenville County deputies were called to the school for a report that a student had a gun on a school bus.

Deputies responded to the school on North Flat Rock Road around 8:40 a.m. Thursday when the school was placed on a partial lockdown, according to the Sheriff's Office and Beth Brotherton, a Greenville County School District spokeswoman.

The 12-year-old boy is in custody and the case is still under investigation, said Lt. Ryan Flood, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.

The boy was charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds and unlawful carrying of pistol, Flood said. Due to the student's age, a family court judge issued a pick-up order that allowed deputies to place him under arrest.

It was not immediately clear why the boy had brought the gun from home. Investigators have received conflicting reports as to his motives but determined there were no threats made to students or the school as a whole, Flood said.

Investigators learned that students quickly notified administrators after learning the student was in possession of a gun, Flood said.

The school was put on a partial lock down after school administrators were notified. The school was no longer on a partial lockdown as of 10:15 a.m.

The 12-year-old student has been suspended and will be recommended for expulsion, Brotherton said in an email. The parents of the student do not face charges, Flood said.

"We are grateful to the brave students who did the right thing and reported what they saw. We tell students often that if you 'see something, say something,'" Brotherton said. "It is one of the best ways to keep a school safe. Their information allowed the school to take quick action."
