Reedy River Duck Derby: Your shot at $1 million, free groceries for a year
The 14th Reedy River Duck Derby is approaching fast and the prizes are big.
The annual event fills Reedy River Falls with thousands of yellow rubber ducks in the name of charity.
The Duck Derby is the primary fundraising project of the Rotary Club of Greenville Evening, a local service organization.
On May 5, about 10,000 rubber ducks, each sponsored by a private donor, will be released into the river at the top of the falls. The ducks will race over the falls aiming for a chute at the bottom.
The owner of the first duck to fall through the chute will win $75 a week in groceries from Publix.
The second place finisher will receive $1,500 in cash. Third place earns an all-expenses paid golf weekend at Embassy Suites.
One duck in every 3,000 in the race will be randomly selected as a potential winning Million Dollar Duck by a third party, according to organizers. When the first adopted duck crosses the finish line, a race official will determine whether it is one of the pre-selected million dollar winning ducks. If it is not, the million dollar prize will not be awarded.
Anyone interested in participating can adopt a duck now for $10 a piece or spend $30 for a pack of five before April 14. After April 14 the super quack pack prize goes to $30 for four ducks.
In addition to the duck race, the event will feature food vendors and live music as well as a brand-new hat contest.
The derby hat contest is sponsored by Locally Epic. Participants must preregister at locallyepic.com/derbyhat. The contest will be judged by local celebrities and a rotary representative. First place wins $300. Second prize is $200 and third is $100.
Funds raised through the Reedy River Duck Derby help support United Ministries, Mauldin Miracle League, Girls on the Run and Anderson District One's EarlyAct FirstKnight program, a character education program that serves schools in the Powdersville area.
House of Raeford Farms is sponsoring the champion duck prize. McKinney Dodge is sponsoring the million dollar duck prize.
The event runs May 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The hat contest will be held at 1:30 p.m.
