Registration for the Children's Hospital Diaper Bank at Prisma Health begins January 3
Diapers are expensive and babies use far more than most new parents would expect. That’s the reality, even at a time when families may find their finances stretched thin. To help families who need it most, the Children's Hospital Diaper Bank at Prisma Health stands in the gap.
The diaper bank is a program of the Bradshaw Institute for Community Child Health & Advocacy, part of Prisma Health Children’s Hospital.
“There’s a real need,” Jackie Young, program coordinator with Bradshaw Institute, said. “The National Diaper Bank Network sys the statistic back in 2019 was that one in three families report a diaper need.”
Young said the pandemic affected families financially and caused diaper shortages as recently as October. And that means it is even tougher for many families to have what they need for their babies. To help ease the burden, the diaper bank will hold a distribution event Jan. 25 at Prisma Health Patewood.
“If you can’t change a baby’s diapers, they are more susceptible to things like a urinary tract infection or rashes,” Young said.
That could lead to the added expense of medical costs on top of the diaper need.
At the four large distribution events held in 2021, Young said the most requested diaper sizes were 4, 5 and 6 – those typically needed for toddlers ages 2 – 4, which is also a population that is often in childcare so parents can work, according to Young.
“A lot of childcare facilities require you to bring diapers,” she said. “If you don’t have diapers, you might have to miss work, so there’s another financial repercussion. When you’re in that cycle, it is hard to get out and find any relief. It’s important that we help families that are under-resourced.”
The upcoming event will be held in Greenville, but Young said the need is great throughout the Upstate and she hopes to expand distribution across the area, from Oconee to Laurens Counties and in between. In addition to the large events, the diaper bank distributes diapers through community organizations and local pediatric offices. Learn more at PrismaHealth.org/BradshawInstitute.
