Sara Bunton Powell showcases her baking skills on Discovery + show “Cakealikes” starting Jan 4.

A deep dive into YouTube cake decorating tutorials years ago has resulted in something a local mom never expected.

Upstate baker Sara Bunton Powell is featured in “Cakealikes,” a comedic cake competition series that streams on the new Discovery+ platform beginning Jan. 4. On each episode of “Cakealikes,” three teams of cake artists compete to create the most realistic, life-sized cake replicas of famed celebrities.

For Powell, a mother of four, creating gorgeous cakes has become what she calls “a double win,” since it serves as a creative outlet and a source of income.

“I’ve been doing cakes for the better part of 10 years,” she said. “It’s been my artistic outlet for some time now. I primarily work from home, taking high-end, custom orders.”

Powell creates edible masterpieces for birthdays, weddings and more, but a life-sized celebrity? That’s new. It also turned out to be a lot of fun for Powell and her brother, Jesse Bunton, who partnered with her in the competition.

“It was a big adventure,” she said. “I’m always up for a challenge – and this was a huge challenge. I loved it. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

“Cakealikes” competition series, featuring cakes that look like celebrities Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, RuPaul, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Flavor Flav, and The Brady Bunch is available to stream exclusively on Discovery+ beginning on Jan. 4. The show features Tregaye Fraser along with renowned expert cake sculptor Natalie Sideserf, comedic food commentator Kalen Allen and a rotating panel of guest judges to determine which Cakealike earns the winner a prize totaling $10,000 and a one-of-a-kind celebrity souvenir.
