Mom to Mom: Self-Care Awareness Month

September is National Self-Care Awareness Month. After the past six months, we all need to take care of ourselves, don’t we? As parents, we cannot fill up our families if we are empty. 

Taking care of ourselves can be as simple and inexpensive as taking a walk, exercising or having an afternoon nap. It can also get as involved and costly as weekly relaxing massages and visiting an esthetician for beauty treatments. 

Regardless of how you choose to care for yourself, what matters is that you do it. It’s not a selfish thing – despite what our precious children tell us – but rather a way to keep your body and mind relaxed, focused and ready to tackle the day.

As a married mom of four, I rarely have time to myself. That has been especially true over the past six months. Growing up I was an only child, so while I am very much a people person, I also need that quiet time to recharge – something that has been sorely lacking this year. So last month, I took a weekend by myself. I booked a room, shut myself in and ignored the world for 48 hours. I slept. I watched television. I found local (and unpopulated) sights to take in. I took deep breaths and reveled in the solitude. And when I came home, I felt relaxed, more in tune with myself and better prepared to handle the tornado that is my family.

It’s not always easy or convenient to make time for yourself, but it is absolutely necessary. Schedule time for yourself this month whether it’s reading that book that’s been on your shelf all year or playing a round of golf. What fills your cup so you are more prepared to fill the cups of your family members?
