Our family loves ice cream. There is no such thing as a season for ice cream in our house, they are all the season for the frozen creamy yumminess that is ice cream. With a broad definition of what constitutes “ice cream” (gelato, custard and frozen yogurt are all included) we challenged to ourselves this month to find some of the best in the Upstate. The rules were simple: local, adored by us all, unique atmosphere. Although we only made it to seven this round, we have a plan finish the ice cream extravaganza in the coming months to create a new list, a better list, a more inclusive ice cream list.

Molly and Miles Ice Cream located in Greenville and soon to have a second location was our hands down favorite. The superhero themed store has amazing flavors, outstanding cones, monthly coloring contests, comic books, board games and prizes for the kids. 3225 N. Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville. https://mollyandmylesicecream.com 864-263-3232

Pink Mama’s Ice Cream has two brick and mortar locations in the Upstate, in Traveler’s Rest and off Pleasantburg in Greenville. They also have an ice cream truck. For this trip we went to the original store in TR, ate the pink waffle cones and took selfies. Any ice cream that encourages pink hair is a win in our family book. 11 S. Main St., Travelers Rest, https://pinkmamasicecream.com 864-905-4849. Open seasonally: 2551 N. Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville 864-603-1398

Pickwick Pharmacy has been a Greenville staple for three generations and 133 years. The ice cream shop here is an old-style soda shop that we enjoyed just for the novelty of sitting at the counter. The ice cream was from local Happy Cow Creamery and the women behind the counter were lively and fun. 3219 Augusta Road, Greenville. https://www.thepickwick.net 864-277-4180

Sidewall Pizza is our recommendation if you need a whole meal and a dessert. We debated if it fit our requirements since there are five locations, but our hungry tummies won out and we were not disappointed. We ordered a pizza for the family and finished it off with the homemade ice cream. The location in TR makes all the ice cream for the other locations and it was one of the creamiest we’ve had. Small batch soda, small batch ice cream, what isn’t to love? 35 S. Main Street, Travelers Rest. http://www.sidewallpizza.com 864-610-0527

Big Ben’s Dessert Shop located in Lyman has more than just ice cream. It is top on our list of local places to visit again and again just to eat all of the desserts. There is more there than any one person can eat, but we all found something we wanted in addition to the ice cream. Also, I should mention that you really need to try the banana pudding. 297 Spartanburg Highway, Lyman. https://bigbensdesserts.com 864-485-2001

Hub City Scoops was just a fun and lively trip. The bright interior is cheery and the service there was outstanding. I never knew how much ice cream we were missing until we tried the nacho ice cream and flight of ice cream. I think we might have tested out every ice cream there. 147 E. Main St., Spartanburg. http://www.hubcityscoops.com 864-586-1100

Luna Rosa Gelato Café and Restaurant makes a delectable gelato. The flavors are all made in the store and the owner is frequently on site. Just one scoop is enough to send you to the moon and back in delight. Not to be overlooked, their food menu always gets top marks in our family and since they moved locations, they also serve one-of-a-kind libations. 123 S. Main St., Greenville. https://lunarosagelato.com 864-241-4040
