On the Shelf: Bonus Books – Valentine’s Day
Say “I love you” all year long with time spent reading together
Happy Heart by Hannah Eliot, illustrated by Susie Hammer (Simon and Schuster, ages 1 – 5) With a different shape on each page, this glittery board book shines (without spreading glitter!) and will delight kids with its message of love. This one is ideal for a quick but meaningful bedtime read.
PJ Masks: Friendship Saves the Day by Ximena Hastings (Simon and Schuster, ages 2 – 5) Celebrate the love of friends with this board book featuring the PJ Masks characters kids love. Who took the class valentines – and why? Kids will love finding out.
I Heart You by Meg Fleming, illustrated by Sarah Jane Wright (Simon and Schuster, ages birth – 8) This is a board book that grows with your child. In sweet, rhyming text and accompanied by delicate illustrations, see the lengths moms and dads of all kinds will go to let their little ones know they are loved.
Fred’s Big Feelings: The Life and Legacy of Mister Rogers by Laura Renauld, illustrated by Brigette Barrager (Simon and Schuster, ages 4 – 8) Parents may not be able to get through this one without tears. It is such a wonderful book for giving children a greater appreciation for this icon. From little Freddy Rogers’ loneliness to Mister Rogers’ position as an advocate for children, this book is the story of how one man touched generations with compassion and nurturing. His message has never been more important.
Angelina Loves by Katherine Holabird, illustrated by Helen Craig (Simon and Schuster, ages 2 – 5) Kids know Angelina Ballerina loves to dance, but what else does she love? Her best friend, her baby sister and so much more. This padded cover board book – at the reading level of a picture book – is great for sticking in a travel bag or even the car.
I Love You, Fred by Mick Inkpen, illustrated by Chloe Inkpen (Simon and Schuster, ages 4 – 6) You can dare kids not to giggle at Fred the dog as he learns his name. (They will laugh, and I bet you will, too.) This one is just plain fun.
With a Little Help from My Friends by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, illustrated by Henry Cole (Simon and Schuster, ages 4 and older) Pro tip: too tired to read tonight? You can sing this one. Pair Lennon and McCartney’s classic lyrics with rich illustrations that make the song relevant to young kids and this book is bound to be a hit.
And a Presidents Day bonus:
The Presidents: Portraits of History by Leah Tinari (Aladdin, ages 10 and older) Creative, engaging illustrations – themselves filled with facts and trivia – accompany some of the lesser known facts about American presidents in this book that will have kids ready to ace the extra credit questions on their history test.
