There are a number of trails around and ascending the mighty summit of Table Rock. A stop at park headquarters can be wise to gather information about this popular park. A large three-dimensional relief map shows the lay of the land.

The best-known trail is a hike to the peak. The Pinnacle Mountain Trail is 4.2 miles one way and is considered very strenuous. It climbs 2,000 feet. This hike is definitely not appropriate for all families. I do know a father and young son who made it, but I won’t be taking my kids anytime soon. The view, however, is fantastic, and if you are in good physical condition, it’s well worth the experience.

If the Pinnacle Mountain Trail is too much for you, that’s OK! There’s still plenty to explore at Table Rock.

The Lakeside Trail is only a 1.9-mile loop with an easy rating. Hikers will enjoy scenic views of the mountain. The trail begins at the boathouse and passes historic structures – an old stone boat landing, the lodge and a dam. These structures were built by the Civil Conservation Corps during the 1930s.

Carrick Creek is a popular trail for its waterfalls. It is a two-mile loop rated moderate. After only 100 yards, visitors come upon the observation deck at Carrick Creek Falls. During summer, people get in the pool to cool off. The rest of the year, folks congregate at the benches surrounding the falls. As you continue uphill along the trail, you’ll pass other cascades. The hike takes approximately one hour to complete.

If another trail on the park’s website catches your eye, read the description carefully. The Ridge Trail and the Mill Creek Trail start after the completion of the summit hike.

The park offers much more than just hiking. In summer, there’s a lake for swimming. Next to the lake is a playground. And of course, picnic tables are scattered throughout the park. The park features 94 campsites. Other visitors prefer to stay in the rustic cabins on the park property.

Music on the Mountain is a monthly bluegrass event. Local musicians bring their instruments to play along. Check the program schedule for other special events. You could end up learning about anything from a nature program to yoga to a movie.

Table Rock State Park is located in Pickens. Get all the details at
