Children’s Museum of the Upstate names new CEO
New leadership is coming to The Children’s Museum of the Upstate. The museum’s board has hired Hillary Spencer as President and CEO. Spencer is a former director of operations for global business development at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. She will take over the position on May 1, replacing interim CEO Michelle Shain who will serve as a consultant during the transition.
Spencer most recently served as the Director of Nomad Exhibitions, a firm specializing in design, production and business strategy for traveling exhibitions. She also spent more than 10 years at the American Museum of Natural History, where she served as the Assistant Director of Global Business Development and managed operational infrastructure and business strategy for key revenue generating properties, including the museum’s traveling exhibitions program.
Spencer’s prior experience includes the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Getty Center, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the Pasadena Museum of California Art, the San Diego Natural History Museum and the Museum of Latin American Art. As the mother of two young children, Spencer said she is “excited to bring ‘out of the box’ ideas to life, ones that will closely engage Upstate parents and children in this wonderful and very welcoming community.”
