First grader brings unloaded gun to Greenville County school
A student at Mitchell Road Elementary in Greenville County brought a gun to the school Tuesday.
The first grade student brought the weapon to campus in his backpack, according to Greenville County Schools spokeswoman Beth Brotherton.
"After being alerted by another student, the teacher immediately took possession of the book bag and notified the administration," Brotherton said in a release.
Law enforcement arrived at the school and retrieved the bag where the unloaded gun was found, a release said. An investigation is underway.
Brotherton said the the student who brought the gun will be suspended and recommended for expulsion, in keeping with federal law and board policy.
"We are extremely grateful to the student who reported this weapon. We urge parents to have a conversation with their children to tell them that weapons are never allowed in school and the consequences for bringing them are great," Brotherton added.
This is third instance of a Greenville County student bringing a gun to school this month.
