A Woodmont Middle School student had a loaded pistol on school grounds Thursday, according to Greenville County Schools and the Sheriff's Office.

What we know

  • Students told school officials they saw a student carrying a gun on the school bus Thursday morning, Beth Brotherton, spokeswoman for Greenville County Schools, said.
  • A school resource officer and other law enforcement were notified and responded.
  • The school was placed on partial lockdown Thursday morning.
  • The student who had the gun is a 12-year-old boy who is in the sixth grade, Brotherton said.
  • A pistol was found in the boy's backpack, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office said.
  • The boy was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds and unlawful carrying of a pistol, Lt. Ryan Flood of the Sheriff's Office said.
  • The boy's parents will not face charges, Flood said.
  • The boy is also suspended from school and will be recommended for expulsion, Brotherton said.
  • The student got the gun from home, Flood said.
  • No threats were made to other students or to the school, according to the Sheriff's Office.

What we don't know

  • It's not clear why the student brought the gun to school. Investigators received conflicting reports on his motives, Flood said. "Anything I would say about that would be speculation," Flood said.
  • Because of his age, the student's name was not released.
