A Greenville County Schools official confirmed that 84 students and 10 teachers were absent from Augusta Circle Elementary School Monday largely because of illness.

School district spokeswoman Beth Brotherton said custodians performed extra cleaning at the school, which has 532 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

At least a quarter of the student absences were attributed to the flu, according to Brotherton.

The state Department of Health and Environmental Control was to be notified about the large number of absences by the end of the school day, Brotherton said.
