Get outside, be active and participate in a scavenger hunt that can make memories for a lifetime.

Sound like fun? Park Hop 2018 is how you can make it happen for your family.

Park Hop is a summer-long scavenger hunt across more than a dozen parks in Greenville County. The program started in 2013 and is designed to help combat childhood obesity and influence park usage, discovery, park-based physical activity and perceptions of parks among children and adolescents. It began with the collaborative “At Play” workgroup with LiveWell Greenville and has grown each year.

Mary Jane Parks, a Park Hop Park Partner with Mauldin Parks and Recreation, said the initiative spotlights parks throughout the summer.

“It’s really about getting the community out, not just in the parks, but you can get out where you live,” she said.

At park spotlight events, held 10 a.m. – noon on select Fridays, families will be able to meet a princess from Once Upon a Dream Parties, participate in a fun water activity and experience the City of Greenville’s Mobi-Rec program, which brings obstacle courses and other structured activities to the parks. The events also give families ideas about new ways to use the parks on their own.

“We show parents and children that there are other things to do,” Parks said. “Bring a jump rope with you or make use of the park’s other amenities. You can make up your own scavenger hunt.”

Parks said Park Hop is designed to be inclusive for families, but for the parks as well.

“We aren’t entities unto ourselves,” she said. “We really are a community.”
