When Tara Shropshier Rice and her husband had their son two years ago, she decided to give up her career in nursing full-time to be a stay-at-home mom.

“About a year into it, I realized while buying things for him around Greenville that, gosh, Augusta Road is a long haul from this side of town with a little one in tow,” she said, referring to her home in the Five Forks area of Greenville. “We started playing around with the idea of, what if we opened a kid’s clothing store on this side of town?”

The result is The Little Beehive, a children’s clothing boutique, that opened a little over a year ago at 2131 Woodruff Road in Greenville. Featuring top-quality clothes and gifts for infants, boys, girls and tweens, the store carries a variety of popular brands, such as Peaches ‘n Cream, J. Bailey and Serendipity Clothing Co.

It was important to Rice to also carry local vendors in the boutique.

“We carry a lot of local lady-owned businesses who do fun things like necklaces and bracelets, homemade leggings and cool stuff like that,” she said. “We wanted to bring some traditional brands that everyone loves to this area, but also feature some cool, funky things. Also, we’ve pulled from companies that aren’t as well known, so we have a fun, diverse selection in the store.”

The Little Beehive also carries smocked and appliqued clothes in a variety of designs and colors. Some of the most popular items in the store are Kickee Pants, trendy footies made from bamboo material.

“Kickee Pants are a huge thing for new moms,” she said. “They come in funky prints, and it’s super trendy. People go on resale sites and are seeking prints from a year ago and paying triple the retail prices for them, so these are a good investment.”

Rice said she’s benefited from foot traffic from nearby stores and attracted a lot of moms who find the store’s location more parent-friendly.

“One of my biggest things was location,” Rice said. “I wanted to make sure moms with babies could find easy parking, because that is always my biggest deterrence as a mom when I am shopping.”

She also puts a lot of emphasis on good customer service.

“If I don’t have it, I’ll find it,” she said. “I’ll call other stores in Greenville to see if they have it for you. I have fallen in love with my customers and their stories and their families. I want their visit here to be a good experience from start to finish.”

The Little Beehive is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mondays – Fridays and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturdays. Learn more about the store online at www.thelittlebeehivesc.com.
