Feeling adventurous? Take an instructor-led class on kayaking
A kayak paddle or stand-up paddleboard session is the perfect way to decompress with friends after a long day at work. The Lake Cooley Outdoor Education Center in Inman is offering instructor-led kayak and paddleboarding on select Wednesdays at 6 p.m. throughout the summer.
“I love to paddle board,” said Chris Spencer, recreation coordinator at the center. “It is a really great workout, but it is very laid back and relaxed. You don’t feel like you are working out.”
In addition to the exercise benefits, Spencer enjoys the opportunity to experience wildlife up close.
“You have a good view of fish and underwater plant life,” he said.
You don't have to be experienced. The Wednesday evening paddles are a great opportunity to learn a new skill. You don't even have to own your own paddle board or kayak. Advanced reservations are required, but you can easily reserve your spot on the website at www.spartanburgparks.org. The fee is $10. You can pay with cash, check or credit card, but if you pay cash, exact change is required.
If you just want to get out with your family or friends on a Saturday between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. or Sunday between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m, the education center offers two-hour kayak or paddle board rentals for $10. Specialty kayaks such as fishing or tandem are available for an additional fee. Children under 10 cannot be on a kayak or paddle board alone.
A limited number of tandem kayaks are available so that children can ride with parents. Life jackets are available for people over the age of 10. Children under the age of 10 must have their own lifejackets. Snacks are sold through the recreation center.
