Tired of the same old workout? Looking for a heart-pounding adrenaline rush? Mountain biking might be the perfect workout for you.

“Mountain biking is physically challenging, but fun,” said Greenville mom and mountain biker Beth Trenor. “I love going downhill and over rocks. It is an adrenaline-driven sport. There are tricky and challenging parts to the trails. It is satisfying to clear parts of the trail, you haven't been able to clear before.”

Trenor loves the challenge but stressed there are differing levels of trails for riders of different abilities. Her favorite beginner’s trail is Pleasant Ridge County Park in Slater/Marietta.

“It offers a single loop, 5-mile ride,” she said. “It is not too technically challenging, but just hard enough to feel accomplished when you complete your ride.”

As you ride, if you are nervous about a particular section, it is OK to get off the bike and walk.

“There are some sections of trails that you look at and think that no one could ride that,” she said.

At the same time, she cautions new riders to expect to fall sometimes.

“It is part of the game,” she said. “Falling is how you learn and get better. If you fall going over a section, get up and try again. Everybody falls. It is a sign that you are growing and learning.”

Expect to be a little sore after your first few rides, too.

“You use your full body as you are getting up and down out of the saddle, going over roots and rocks,” Trenor said.

She advises new riders not to get caught up in going a certain speed.

“Speed isn't the point,” she said. “Ride as cautiously as you need to. If you are in a group, go your own speed. The other riders will just be excited that you are out there.”

If you don't have a bike, Trenor suggests you rent a bike.

“It is a sport that people either really love or they don't like it at all,” she said. “You don't want to be out a lot of money and then realize that the sport isn't really for you.”

Local bike shops will help you find a bike that fits your body and make sure you are comfortable.
