ThredUp: Online consignment with lots of options
I have a new shopping obsession: ThredUp. ThredUp is an online designer clothing store. All of the clothes are consignment, so they are priced up to 75 percent off retail.
Here’s how it works. Go online, create an account and start shopping. The site has thousands of items, but you can sort by sizes, brands and types of clothing. Since I wear petite sizes, I was really excited to find a wide assortment of petite clothing from brands I love.
The site also offers plus, tall, maternity and kids options. In addition to clothing, there are terrific designer handbags, shoes and accessories.
The best part is that shipping is free for purchases over $70 and they will donate 5 percent of your purchases to the school of your choice. Once you receive your clothing, you can return it free for store credit if anything doesn’t fit.
I purchased eight items using a first-time buyer discount code. My total was $90.42. I also ordered a free clean-out bag from the company. This is a fairly easy way to earn a little money for my next purchase. They send you the bag and you fill it with your gently used clothing. You ship it back for free and they pay you for items they accept.
Be aware that the payout for items is very low — $2 – $3 for a pair of jeans or top, or $20 for a nice designer bag. There is a calculator online that will estimate the payout. Quality standards are high. ThredUp only accepts about 40 percent of submitted items. They donate or recycle items that they do not accept, or you can opt to pay to have items shipped back to you at your cost. If you are willing to spend the time, eBay or local consignment stores will provide a better payout.
If you are just concerned with making space in your closet and possibly earning a little, however, ThredUp is a good option. Visit www.thredup.com.
