Eat Out: All about Nothing Bundt Cakes
Trends come and go, but some stand the test of time. Take the Bundt cake for example. Once the rage for baking cakes, the Bundt pan was a kitchen staple.
Invented by engineer H. David Dalquist in 1950, the Bundt pan’s distinct ring-shaped form was inspired by the dense European cakes served at social gatherings and afternoon coffees. The pan made it easy for just about anyone to bake a cake. While the trend for baking peaked in the late ‘60s, our love for cake did not.
Bundt cakes are having a moment once again thanks to Nothing Bundt Cakes, a concept started by two entrepreneurs in Las Vegas in 1997. Today, there are more than 200 bakeries across the country serving decadent versions of the iconic design.
Diane Hardy brings the beloved cake to Greenville with the new Nothing Bundt Cakes bakery, which opened late last year in the Verdae Village Shopping Center.
“I never entertained the thought of opening a bakery and had little baking experience,” said Hardy, owner of Nothing Bundt Cakes in Greenville. “But one taste of the cake changed the direction of my life.”
Baked from scratch on site, cakes are available in 10 different flavors, such as white chocolate raspberry, red velvet, chocolate chocolate chip and lemon. There’s also a featured flavor and a gluten-free option.
Traditional 8-inch and 10-inch sizes can be tiered and decorated for special occasions and weddings. Bundtlets are a little larger than a cupcake and ideal for trying new flavors and the smallest bite-size, Buntinis, are sold by the dozen.
“The Buntinis have been popular for tailgates during football season,” Hardy said. “And we’re seeing more and more interest in wedding cakes.”
Cakes are frosted with thick petals of signature crème cheese frosting, which is made in-house, or drizzled with a lighter version and can be customized from a choice of 40 unique handcrafted designs.
“To meet the growing demand, we recently launched a local delivery service,” Hardy said. “So you may see the Bundt-mobile cruising around Greenville.”
