Las Meras Tortas: Tacos plus much more

Super-fresh ingredients make Las Meras Tortas a step above a typical sandwich shop and, with two locations open seven days a week, there’s no excuse not to stop in with your family.

Yes, there are fantastic tacos, quesadillas, flautas, huaraches and burritos to order, but with tortas  — Mexican for sandwiches — right in the name, what do you think you should try first?

These street food-style subs are delicious. You’ll question how your dining life in Greenville existed before eating here. Choose from 13 unique tortas; my favorite is the La Mexicana filled with carne asada, ham, pineapple and Oaxaca cheese, but it’s the way these sandwiches are dressed that makes them delectable. Unless specified otherwise, your sandwich will come dressed with refried beans, tomato, onion, jalapeno, cheese, avocado and mayo. I’m still contemplating why a veneer of refried beans works with everything else going on here, but it does.

These are densely packed sandwiches served on a sliced, slightly toasted telera bun, baked on site each morning. And, there’s a salsa bar stocked with every sauce imaginable — and it’s not just for tacos. In Mexico City, you wouldn’t be caught dead eating a torta without salsa, so slop away. The sign of a successful torta experience is at least a half-dozen napkins.

Less-adventurous kids may want a simpler sandwich or quesadilla and Las Meras Tortas is happy to comply. Both locations are unassuming family spots, with clean booths, friendly bilingual service and easy parking. You’ll be glad you found it.

Eat Out! tip: A stellar website walks you through Las Meras Tortas complete menu, so visit before you go.
