Baby yoga offers calming respite for Upstate moms

The first stages of parenthood can be an anxious time, and some Upstate moms are finding that baby yoga can provide a calm moment — plus other benefits.

“Especially in the early months after birth, most mothers don’t care for themselves as much as they should, so taking the time to do yoga while also caring and loving in their baby, is the perfect way to rebuild strength and confidence postpartum,” said Ally Wannamaker of Integrative Yoga Therapy in Easley.

Wannamaker believes baby yoga offers therapeutic benefits for an infant — aiding digestion and cognitive development, for example — while increasing the bond with mom. One local mom started attending Vibrant Life Yoga on Augusta Street with her baby after moving here from Florida.

“It was a great way to make new friends, get back into shape and connect with your baby on a different level,” Brittany Hopper said. “Baby yoga is great. I highly suggest anyone do it.”

Both Integrative Yoga Therapy and Vibrant Life Yoga offer baby yoga classes on a drop-in basis.
