2019 Educators Who Make a Difference: Tim Gibbons
Tim Gibbons isn’t a classroom teacher, but that does not limit his influence on students. As head coach for the cross country teams at Southside Christian School, he sets the tone by running alongside the fastest team member.
Gibbons coached at USC Upstate after college. He started as a volunteer with the track team at Southside and now works in the operations department in addition to his coaching duties. He is married and is the father of three sons.
Though he said he is a big competitor who likes to win, he believes coaching goes far beyond wins and losses.
“I think the world would say, ‘Let me look out for me and get mine,’” he said.
“I try to show them that it’s not just about us. God put us here to love and to serve. If we can do than on any kind of level, what may seem small to us usually makes an impact on people who are hurting. I have a lot of great kids that I’ve worked with. I’m trying to build relationships with them.”
Gibbons takes the fastest runners beyond the campus.
“When you’re running 8 miles, it gets old to run the same loop,” he said.
Long after the season, Gibbons wants to have challenged the students to be their best. He said they encourage him just as much.
“Generally, I’m pretty quiet and reserved,” he said. “But when it comes to coaching, to get kids comfortable, I sometimes have to get out of my comfort zone.”
