If you’ve been reading my fitness column for long, you know that I think exercise should be fun. Westside Club Spartanburg owner Keith Doster agrees.

“If it isn’t fun, you aren’t doing it right,” he said.

While there are a lot of fitness fun options at the club, it is most noted for its tennis program. With eight outdoor clay courts, one outdoor hardcourt and two indoor courts, there is ample space to learn a new sport.

“You are never too old to learn,” said Arnold Romani, the club’s head tennis pro. “It is a sport that you can continue for the rest of your life. You have the rest of your life to become good at it.”

While tennis has many cardiovascular benefits and will help you get fit, you don’t have to be a great athlete to start.

“A lot of people want to play, but when they see really great tennis players on the court, they are intimidated,” Romani said. “If you come in as a beginner, you can learn with other beginners. Most people are a little scared coming in for the first time. They always leave saying that they wish they had learned sooner.”

For Romani, beginners are some of the most fun people to teach.

“They are like sponges,” he said.

If you want to learn to play, Romani suggests beginning with a private lesson or two.

“There are so many different levels in tennis,” he said. “A lesson gives us a chance to see what group you would fit best.”

If you have a group of friends that would like to learn together, that is another option.

“It is so much fun just to move round and hit a few balls,” he said. “Most people leave laughing. They have had such a good time here.”

If you are interested in scheduling a tennis lesson, you can reach The Westside Club at 864-587-7106. You do not have to be a member to play.

“I love tennis,” said Romani. “It is the only exercise I ever do.”
