Two upcoming musicals will make great date nights
July is a great time to come in from the heat and see a show, and both Greenville and Spartanburg are rich with talented performing artists. In July, two local productions are perfect for date night or a girls’ night out.
In Spartanburg, at Chapman Cultural Center, the Spartanburg Little Theater will perform this year’s fringe musical — “Xanadu,” a zany take on the 1980s cult classic film, complete with disco balls, and roller skates. The Tony-award-winning musical follows the journey of Greek muse Kira, who descends from Mount Olympus to inspire a struggling artist to create the first roller disco. While I have not seen the movie off of which the musical is based, I have heard many of the songs, and though they are old, you have probably heard them too. Originally performed by Olivia Newton-John, hits like “Suddenly,” “Evil Woman” and “Magic” will leave you singing long after the show is over. “Xanadu” is playing July 14, 15 and 16 and July 21, 22 and 23. Make sure you hire a sitter. The show is not suitable for young children. For tickets or more information go to www.spartanburglittletheater.com.
Music aficionados won’t want to miss July’s show at Centre Stage. “Million Dollar Quartet” was inspired by a recording session that brought together rock ’n’ roll legends Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. The hits featured in the show are too numerous to list, but include “Great Balls of Fire,” “Walk the Line,” “Sixteen Tons” and “Hound Dog.” The Tony-nominated musical inspired the hit show “Sun Records” on CMT.
Catch “Million Dollar Quartet” at Centre Stage July 20 – Aug. 12. For tickets or more information, go to www.centrestage.org.
