Meet 10 students in the Upstate who are making a difference in their communities.

Jordan Smith loves to learn.

As a student at Cherrydale Elementary School in Greenville, Jordan inspires those around him with his natural curiosity and leadership skills. Jordan’s teachers, Stephanie White and Steven Thompson, nominated him to their school’s principal, Debra Johnson, saying:

“While working with others, he consistently elevates the level of all students’ work. He encourages his partners to do their best by praising their achievements and kindly spurring improvements. As an excellent time manager, Jordan keeps his classmates on task allowing his group to have time for extension activities. On the playground, Jordan varies who he plays with, showing himself friendly to everyone. He often initiates games that allow all children who would like to play to join. While he demonstrates initiative in leading games, he also is a team player when others are team captains. Jordan shows good sportsmanship when his team wins as well as when they lose. There has not been a time when Jordan has refused a task he was asked to do. Whether asked to demonstrate how to work a difficult math problem or to help a fellow classmate, Jordan does everything with a humble spirit and a smile.”

DeVonda Smith, Jordan’s mother, said he wants to be a chemist when he grows up, but for now he inspires those around him.

“He has a huge heart, and if it’s his last and somebody needs it, he’s going to give it to them.” she said. “I think that’s what makes him so special.”

Jordan keeps his focus on the Golden Rule.

“I want to help out my friends and try to show kindness and treat others the way I want to be treated,” he said.

Nomination excerpt: “Jordan Smith an excellent, well-rounded student. His love of learning and natural curiosity drive him to do more than is required simply for the sake of gaining more knowledge.”
