Tito’s New York Style Pizza and Italian Restaurant sits on a funny part of Pleasantburg Drive between Wade Hampton and Rutherford Road.

The pizza is old-school fantastic. Though they offer takeout, I think the crust is noteworthy straight from the oven. For this reason, we prefer to dine in. The best booth is on the right side of the restaurant against the kitchen wall — it has a window to watch the guys throw pizza dough. If it’s occupied, we’ll sit nearby and move over when it opens up.

I’ve tasted a lot of firsts at Tito’s. It was the first place I tried a Thomas Creek beer, a chicken Philly sub, and a sfogliatella pastry.

Try to eat just one.

My favorite first from Tito’s, however, involves my friend Heather Kanipe. When I was a new mom, unshowered and exhausted, she said, “I know just what you need. Come over and I’ll order us a white pizza from Tito’s and you’ll feel like an adult again.”

She was right.

Tito’s brushes their perfect crust with olive oil and tops it with mozzarella cheese, ricotta and chopped garlic creating a white pie that no child I know will crave, but adults will love. Heather and I sat there that night and ate it piece by glorious piece and it renewed me.

Since then I’ve tried most of the menu. Tito’s antipasto salad is fantastic. The meat and cheese are rolled into perfect pinwheels (just the right size for preschool-size hands). If your children are fearful of salad, no worries: the iceberg is shredded — an excellent ploy to make lettuce more palatable.

The hot subs are delicious, especially the meatball sub, and the pasta dishes are solidly good.

Tito’s also has a great chocolate chip cannoli with a cookie that always stays crisp.

The bottom line

Tito’s is not open on Sundays. Undoubtedly, it will be the day you crave their fare the most.
