December is a busy month for families, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have time to unwind with a TV special or movie with the family. Here’s a list of what’s new to streaming, holiday specials on TV and movies coming soon to a theater near you.


Freeform kicks off its 25 Days of Christmas on Dec. 1 with showings of “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Elf” and “Disney’s A Christmas Carol.” Other highlights on Freeform include “Toy Story That Time Forgot” at 5:55 p.m. Dec. 9 and “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas” (live action) at 9:15 p.m. Dec. 16. Disney Parks Magical Christmas Celebration will begin at 10 a.m. Dec. 25.

ABC will air “Shrek the Halls” at 8 p.m. Dec. 7, “Disney’s Prep & Landing” at 8:30 p.m. Dec. 14, “I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown” at 8 p.m. Dec. 16, “Disney’s Prep & Landing 2: Naughty vs. Nice” at 8:30 p.m. Dec. 19, and “Happy New Year, Charlie Brown” and “Rudolph’s Shiny New Year” Dec. 26.

CBS will air “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” at 8 p.m. Dec. 9 followed by “Frosty the Snowman” at 9 p.m. and “Frosty Returns” at 9:30 p.m.

NBC will air “It’s a Wonderful Life” at 8 p.m. Dec. 24.


Netflix will debut several new family friendly movies this month, including “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (for older kids) and “The Santa Claus” series of films starring Tim Allen.

Amazon Prime will include several Marvel animated films, including “Thor Animated Movie: Tales of Asgard,” “Hulk Vs.” and “Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow.”

Movie theaters

Some heavily anticipated movies will hit theaters this month, including “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Ferdinand” on Dec. 15. “Ferdinand” is an animated film aimed at families. After Ferdinand, a bull with a big heart, is mistaken for a dangerous beast, he is captured and torn from his home. Determined to return to his family, he rallies a misfit team on the ultimate adventure.

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart opens Dec. 22. Rated PG-13, the movie follows four teenagers who discover an old video game console and are literally drawn into the game's jungle setting becoming the adult avatars they chose.
