Families ready to get outdoors and explore or enjoy some time together have plenty of options this weekend.

Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” is presented by Spartanburg Little Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday, 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg. For tickets and details, visit www.chapmanculturalcenter.org.

Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day Live is at museums across the country. The program provides free admission for two people. “Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice” opens Saturday at the Upcountry History Museum. The exhibit, open through Jan. 27, 2019, is the first child-centered exhibit in the country dedicated to expanding the understanding of dinosaurs and their habitats. Designed for ages 3 – 10, the bilingual (Spanish and English) exhibit features three distinct sections that build on a child’s innate curiosity about dinosaurs: Land of Fire (a warm dinosaur habitat), Land of Ice (a cold dinosaur habitat) and a Field Research Station (complete with a Big Dig experience).Visit www.upcountryhistory.org.

“Shrek the Musical” will again be presented by South Carolina Children’s Theatre at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Peace Center. Based on the beloved animated movie, this production is great for all ages. For details, visit www.peacecenter.org.

Waggin’ at the Waterpark is 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday at Otter Creek Waterpark in Greenville. For a registration fee, participants can bring their dogs for a day of swimming. Event will be held rain or shine. Dog must be 3 months old and completed first round of vaccines. Paris Mountain State Park will host a “Butterfly & Caterpillar Hunt” at 10 a.m. Saturday by Master Gardener Ginger Kopka. After learning about butterflies and caterpillars inside the building, participants will hunt through the forest for caterpillars and their host plants. Meet at Park Center. No registration is necessary for this two-hour program, and there is no charge other than admission. Interpretive Ranger Cathy Taylor will then present a program at 1 p.m. called “Turtle Trail Naturalist Hike,” presenting tools, tips, and hand-outs to encourage the pursuit of natural wonder. Anyone with enthusiasm and curiosity for the natural world can become an Amateur Naturalist. On a one-mile hike along the Turtle Trail, participants will practice some of these skills. This two-hour program costs $7 per person, payable at the admission booth instead of admission, and will begin at the Park Center. Registration is required. Limit 25. A Nature Center Open House and Hunt Cabin Open House is 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday at the South Carolina Botanical Garden in Clemson. Donations support educational programs. Explore science with hands-on activities. Learn about heirloom apples, make cider with an old-fashioned cider press, use an apple corer, peeler and slicer to make a healthy snack and try apple butter on homemade bread.
