Now that students have survived the first week of a new school year, it’s time to celebrate. The Upstate has several family friendly events on tap this weekend.

Starry Nights is Friday at Roper Mountain Science Center. Show times are 6 and 7:30 p.m. at the T. C. Hooper Planetarium. The Daniel Observatory will also be open from 6:45 – 9:45 p.m., weather permitting, for viewing through the 23-inch telescope. Visit www.ropermountain.org.

The 41st annual Peoples Bank Midnight Flight begins with a one-mile race at 8:15 p.m. Friday at the Anderson Area YMCA. A 5K starts at 9 p.m. and a 10K starts at 10 p.m. For details and registration, visit andersonareaymca.org.

The GHS Spuds and Sprouts Booth is 8 a.m. – noon at the Saturday Market in Downtown Greenville. Kids can learn about local foods and try new fruits and vegetables. Visit saturdaymarketlive.com.

The Bon Dance Japanese Culture Festival is 12:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday at McAlister Square in Greenville. Celebrate the end of summer with the annual Japanese culture festival and experience taiko drumming performance, food, Japanese crafts, children's games, martial arts demonstrations, archery, fencing, traditional Japanese arts such as the tea ceremony. The highlight of the event is the Bon Dance or bon odori featuring participants in colorful kimono, happi and yukata. Admission and participation in many activities are free. Back by popular demand and ready for a whole new crew of wee ones, the South Carolina Children’s Theatre will present “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic” at 11 a.m. Saturday. Join Mama Bear and Baby Bear, who need help setting up the perfect pretend picnic. Participation encouraged. Most enjoyed by ages 18 months to 5 years old. Estimated run time is 30-40 minutes. Children ages 4 to 10 are invited to try playing hockey for free 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Saturday at the Pavilion Recreation Complex in Taylors. Hockey’s National Try Hockey for Free Day clinics allow kids to explore the sport of ice hockey with no obligation to continue. All equipment is provided — you just need to arrive one hour early so your child can be fitted. It is open to the first 40 participants who sign up. Must have no experience playing ice hockey. A free Pet First Aid class will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Butler Springs Park in Greenville. The first 40 registrants receive a pet first aid kit. Register with Greenville County Recreation. Visit https://greenvillerec.com for details.
