Things to do with kids this weekend, Aug. 17-19

As we draw closer to the start of school, the weekend offers one last chance for uninterrupted summer fun. Families can get out and enjoy these family friendly events together. 

A Turtle Trail Naturalist Hike begins at 10 a.m. Friday at Paris Mountain State Park. The event is a one-mile, ranger-accompanied walk. The cost is $7 each, payable at the gate instead of park admission. Registration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Call 864-244-5565 or email

Catch a free performance of "Seussical Jr." Friday – Sunday at The Cannon Centre in Greer. Based on the book by Stephen Ahrens, shows are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Join Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters for a fun adventure, ideal for young audiences. For details, visit

Starry Nights is Friday at Roper Mountain Science Center. Show times are 6 and 7:30 p.m. at the T. C. Hooper Planetarium. The Daniel Observatory will also be open from 6:45 – 9:45 p.m., weather permitting, for viewing through the 23-inch telescope. Visit

School Tools Distribution Day is 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Saturday at Freetown Community Center in Greenville with smaller locations at Center for Community Services in Simpsonville and Victor Park Gym in Greer. Sponsored by the United Way of Greenville County, the event will distribute free school supplies to more than 3,000 rising K4 through eight grade students in need in the county. Furman Fan Fest begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Fluor Field in Greenville.  Meet and get autographs from players, enjoy an all-you-can-eat tailgate picnic buffet for $15 and enter giveaways. A special Kids Fun Zone will feature face painting, visits with area mascots, games and activities. Tickets are $8. Walt Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" will be the free movie Saturday for Movies in the Park at Trailblazer Park in Travelers Rest. Bring chairs and blankets and enjoy food and ice cream from food truck vendors. Join local ventriloquist J.J. Puryear in the exhibition "Talking Heads: The Vent Haven Portraits" 2 p.m. Sunday during Family Art Adventure at Greenville County Museum of Art and discover the art of ventriloquism. The event is free. For details, visit

The Greenville Drive and Michelin, N.A., will recognize the Summer Reading All-Stars with a shirt and pre-game parade starting at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Fluor Field. The all-stars from the library systems of Greenville, Anderson, Pickens and Spartanburg Counties will receive a complimentary t-shirt as they arrive, and they will be celebrated with a pregame parade around the warning track. Following the game, all children, including Reading All-Stars, are invited to join in for BlueCross BlueShield Kids Run the Bases.
