School is officially in session for a new year, but there are plenty of weekend activities to help you spend time together as a family.

The Upper South Carolina State Fair continues daily through Labor Day at the Greenville-Pickens Speedway, 3800 Calhoun Memorial Highway, Easley. Featuring games, rides and shows, the fair will also have a petting zoo, dinosaur adventure and exhibit hall open daily. The Peoples Bank Midnight Flight – 40th Anniversary is at 8:15 p.m. Friday at the Anderson Area YMCA. The event includes a one-mile race, a 5K and a 10K. Register at or at

Paris Mountain State Park will hold programs on migratory birds and naturalist tips Saturday. The Friends of Paris Mountain State Park will host Migratory Birds of the Upstate at 10 a.m. After an introduction inside, Jeff Click of the Greenville County Bird Club will lead a family friendly trail walk focused on birds of our area. Find out what birds to expect this fall, and find out how to participate in the fall migrating bird count. Participants are encouraged to bring pictures of birds from their yard for Click to identify. Meet at the Park Center for this two-hour program. No registration is required and there is no charge for this program beyond park admission.

Kids can try hockey for free 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Pavilion Recreation Complex in Taylors. Sponsored by the USA Hockey, National Try Hockey for Free Day is for boys and girls ages 4 – 10 who are interested in trying the sport to see if they’d enjoy it. Equipment is provided. The Girls Scouts of South Carolina – Mountains to Midlands will host an Upstate Volunteer Resource Fair 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday at Roper Mountain Science Center. Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast” will be the free movie screened Saturday night during Movies the Park at Trailblazer Park in Travelers Rest. Vendors will sell concessions, but picnic baskets are allowed. Alcohol is not permitted. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. The movie begins at 8:30 p.m.

The Back to School Family Festival 4 – 7 p.m. Sunday is a free community event planned at Forestville Baptist Church in Greenville. There will be free hot dogs, snow cones, cotton candy, popcorn and drinks along with inflatables, pony rides and train rides. The Critter Keeper will perform at 7 p.m. in the worship center.
