Children’s Book Week is May 2 – 8, and many Upstate bookstores and libraries will celebrate with special events catered to families.

Joe's Place Bookstore

Joe’s Place Bookstore, located at 640 S. Main St., Greenville, will host several free, fun events for kids and families. The store is also offering 15 percent off discounts for teachers and elementary school workers. The store’s events include:

Story time, May 4, 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. May 4:

Experience story time in honor of "May the Fourth be With You" Day. The storyteller will read from children’s Star Wars books.

Children’s book trivia, 3:30 p.m. May 5:

This special trivia event is just for kids. Adults can help their kiddies or browse the store and enjoy a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine, if that's your thing). The winning team gets a $20 gift certificate. This event is for ages 7 – 12. Kids can play by themselves or with a maximum team of three.

Bad Kitty, 10:30 a.m. May 7:

If your kids love the Bad Kitty books, bring them into Joe's Place to meet Bad Kitty in person. At 10:30 a.m., the store’s artist-in-residence (co-owner Alix Bernard) will teach kids how to learn to draw emotions. Coloring sheets, word scrambles, mad libs, etc. will be available all day for anyone who stops by.

Book scavenger hunt, 3 p.m. May 8:

Calling all book lovers, treasure hunters and puzzle solvers. A one-of-a-kind book scavenger hunt awaits you (ages 8 – 18; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). The first five people to solve three book-themed puzzles win a $25 gift card and a signed copy of “Book Scavenger.”

Fiction Addiction

Fiction Addiction, located at 1175 Woods Crossing Road in Greenville, will also observe special events for children throughout the week, including:

Star Wars May the 4th Be With You party, 4 – 5 p.m. May 4:

Dress up as Star Wars character to receive 10 percent off your entire purchase. The event will also include Star Wars story time and activities. There will also be free Star Wars-themed refreshments.

Storytime Thursday, 10:30 a.m. May 5:

Bring your preschool children to Fiction Addiction for a story time reading of the picture book “Frank and Laverne” by Dave Whamond. For more info, call 864-675-0540.

Free Comic Book Day

Grab your little superheroes and head to the nearest comic book store Saturday, May 7. In Greenville, that happens to be Borderlands Comics and Games, Richard’s Comics Collectables and 2nd and Charles. In Spartanburg, head to The Tangled Web, and in Anderson, visit Planet Comics.

This year’s free comics will include “DC Super Hero Girls #1” FCBD 2016 edition, which features two action-packed stories from the upcoming graphic novels “DC Super Hero Girls,” appropriate for all ages.

Stores will also hold giveaways, invite families to dress in costume, and host appearances by comic book artists, writers and characters.

Free Comic Book Day is an annual event where comic book shops across North America open their doors and give free books to anyone who visits (while supplies last). More than two million books will be given away to readers of all ages, with the ultimate goal of introducing a whole new generation to comic books, while celebrating a medium that is very near and dear to our hearts.
