Back in my day, plastic craft lacing was called “boondoggle.” For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term or its uses, we have a project that may help moms and dads harken back to their summer camp days, while getting kids in a creative mood for going back to school.

By weaving this colorful material together, you and your kids can create long-lasting pulls for those well-used zippers throughout the school year.

Supplies:

  • Plastic craft lacing
  • Lanyard hooks
  • Ruler
  • Scissors

Instructions:

Square stitch — This is the basis for all stitches.

  1. Measure and cut two colors of lacing into 18-inch lengths.
  2. Fold both pieces in half to find their center points and cross one center over the other.
  3. Fold the left tail over to the right, and the right over left, forming a loop on each side.
  4. Weave the bottom tail over and through the left loop, then the top tail over and through the right loop. Pull all four tails very tightly to secure.
  5. From the back, clip on the lanyard hook.
  6. Repeat steps four and five until desired length is reached — approximately 1½-inches.
  7. To finish, take two strands in each hand and tie a knot, pulling very tightly. Repeat, tying a second very tight knot.
  8. Trim tails to approximately 1-inch length.

Circle stitch

  1. Repeat steps 1 - 6 from square stitch.
  2. Fold the left and right tails diagonally over the center, forming a loop on each side.
  3. Weave the bottom tail over and through the left loop, then the top tail over and through the right loop. Pull all four tails very tightly to secure.
  4. Repeat steps two and three until desired length is reached — approximately 1½-inches.
  5. Finish as directed for square stitch.
