‘Addams Family’ creepiness comes to Centre Stage
“They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky…” and they are coming to Centre Stage in Greenville!
The hit Broadway musical “The Addams Family” will be performed at 8 p.m. Thursdays – Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays March 17 – April 10.
The musical production is set a few years later than the television show, with a plot that revolves around 18-year-old Wednesday. Wednesday has fallen in love with and plans to marry Lucas Beineke, a boy from a “normal” Ohio family. She invites Beineke and his straight-laced parents to dinner and instructs her parents to act normal. Through the course of the night, the families discover secrets and find that normal can be anything but.
While I have not seen the Centre Stage production, I have seen this show on Broadway. It is lighthearted and fun, and includes many of the beloved characters from the TV show. Watching the musical brought back memories of introducing my husband’s parents to my own. While neither of our families exhibit the craziness of the Addams clan, we both remember the awkward nervousness that came with that first introduction. Wednesday’s plea for her parents to “try to act normal” is one in which I could relate, and I bet you can too!
The show’s relevance and relatability make it one of the funniest musicals I have ever seen. Hire a baby sitter though; this one is not for children under 13.
