If a workout isn't fun, you won’t stick with it. That's why Cyclebar is designed with fun in mind. Varied lighting, a nightclub atmosphere and a rockin’ playlist make a Cyclebar class a workout you will want to go to again and again.

Before you go, there are a few things you need to know.

First, try to sign up for your class in advance. When you sign up, you create an account. You provide your height, weight and shoe size and pick a bike. When you arrive, shoes are waiting for you in a cubby with your bike number, and your bike is preset to fit your body. I can’t tell you how many times I have been to a spin class and had to spend a lot of time tinkering with my bike to figure out if I have the right fit. Having it done for me really took away a lot of the guesswork!

On your first visit, you will receive a reusable water bottle that you can fill onsite. Make sure you get one because you will want to drink lots of water. It is an intense workout! I left class dripping sweat. Arrive 15 minutes early to give yourself time to change shoes, get water and prepare for class. Before you get on your bike, you will want to pick up a four- or six-pound weighted bar for use during the upper body segment. If you have never clipped in on a bike, allow yourself a little time to figure out how to connect your shoes to the pedals. Clipping in is important because it allows you to utilize more muscles during your pedal strokes.

“It takes about five times to get the hang of it,” said Kristi Arledge, Cyclebar manager and instructor.

When you sign up for a class, you will notice there are several different types of classes. Classes are designed with different personalities in mind. The three primary classes are Connect, Classic and Performance. The Connect ride is great for someone who is a little less competitive. It is all about the workout. While you can utilize the data on your bike, participants are encouraged to use the beat of the music to determine speed and intensity. The instructor gives a little guidance for those like to use data to make sure they are on track. The Classic ride is a little more data driven. It utilizes a Fitmetrix board that displays your bike number and performance stats. You can even see how you compare to other class members. If you don't want your stats shown, that’s OK too. The class itself is a good combination of strength, endurance, hills and challenges. Competitive and athletic? You might enjoy Performance classes. The Performance class is interval-based. It uses challenges to motivates athletes to compete against each other and themselves.

In addition to normally scheduled classes, Cyclebar has theme nights, like Throwback Thursday and Wine Wednesdays. Saturday morning’s classes utilize the video monitors for concerts.

“We want people to want to come,” Arledge said. “Instead of thinking I have to go to Spin class, they think ‘I can't miss tonight. It’s Throwback Thursday.’”
