Let your appetite soar at Runway Cafe
To many long-time residents, it might seem like a no-brainer that kids will love stopping for lunch or dinner at the Runway Cafe in Greenville.
On the other hand, parents new to town or who’ve never tried the small cafe situated between the Greenville Downtown Airport – GMU and Runway Park at GMU might be surprised to learn the food is as good as the atmosphere.
Located on the south ramp of the airport, the cafe offers a menu of traditional American cuisine — homemade soups, sandwiches, wraps, salads, pastas and burgers. All ingredients are fresh, and diners can watch planes land and take off while they’re munching on their meals. A radio near the front also lets customers listen to air traffic control, something that makes the experience even more authentic.
Plus, it’s not uncommon for one of the restaurant’s two owners to stop by your table and introduce themselves, and many pilots stopping in for a break have been known to invite kids onto the runway to see their planes up close.
But, back to the food.
The kid’s menu consists of five options, all named to the cafe’s theme of airplanes. The Aviator is a grilled cheese sandwich. The Afterburner is Kraft macaroni and cheese. The Landing Gear features mini corn dogs. Blue Angels gives you chicken nuggets, and the Zeppelin is a quarter-pound cheeseburger. All meals are $3.99 and include a side and a drink.
We hear that all kid’s meal choices are popular and tasty, so even your pickiest little ones should find something to please their palates.
As for the regular menu, the cafe seems known for its burgers, all of which are half-pound Angus beef and also themed to aviation. I personally love the Top Gun, which has cheese, lettuce, tomato and onions. Don’t eat meat? You can substitute a black bean patty for no additional charge.
The bottom line: As the temperature continues to warm, it’s a great time to stop by the Runway Cafe. The food is good, but the atmosphere can’t be beat.
Eat Out tip: Check out the daily specials, and be sure to add an order of fried oreos to your meal for dessert. They’re very tasty! Also, for a limited time, get a free kid’s meal with the purchase of an adult meal between 5 p.m. and closing with the mention of the ad on the cafe’s website.
