Chase Watson is known for the way he treats others.
Described as a young man who is unconcerned with another person’s race, gender, ability or appearance, Chase contributes a great deal to E. P. Todd School in Spartanburg.
Chase’s mother, Tiffany Cohen, said he sees everyone as a new friend.
“He is a child that just wants to play with anyone — girls or boys, color doesn’t matter, even age doesn’t matter,” she said. “He wants to make friends with others.”
Chase also has a helpful nature that informs everything he does.
“His dad owns a convenience store and he helps out there and he helps me with a paper route on Saturdays and Sundays,” his mother said. “Chase is a big helper, no matter what it is. He is an all-around good guy.”
Though he is very active and loves all kinds of skateboards and sports, Chase is also very much at home playing music. He started playing the saxophone this school year and is already a natural at it.
“I’m just throwing things at him to see where his likes are,” his mother said. “He’s good at everything I give him.”
Chase said part of what motivates him to do well is his parents’ pride in his success. A big fan of science fiction movies, Chase said he loves all things science-related, especially the periodic table.
“I like how everything can come together to make different stuff,” he said.
But his character is what really gets the notice of adults and his peers.
“I just like everybody,” he said. “If they are nice to me, I am nice to them.”
Nomination excerpt: “Chase knows the difference between the time to work and the time to play. He always makes sure that his work is the best that it can be, and he encourages those around him to do the same. Although Chase rarely makes anything other than A’s, I wouldn’t consider academics to be his most important contribution. His strongest character trait is the way that he treats others. He doesn’t concern himself with another person’s race, gender, appearance or ability. ”
