If your family is looking for a couple of hours to unwind, there are plenty of new movies coming to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Blu-ray and theaters in May. Plus, we preview the Regal Cinemas Summer Movie Express schedule, which starts in June.

Streaming

There are several kid-friendly movies arriving on Amazon Prime, including “Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown,” “Small Soldiers,” “Star Kid” and “The Wizard of Oz” on May 1. For teens and older kids, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” lands on Amazon Prime May 20.

“Dino Dana,” an original kids series directed by J.J. Johnson is a follow-up to live-action series, “Dino Dan,” and follows a paleontologist in training and her sister Emily as they embark on a series of adventures with dinosaurs. It arrives on Amazon Prime May 26.

Hulu will see the addition of these kid-friendly flicks: “Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home,” “Free Willy 3: The Rescue,” “Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown,” “Small Soldiers,” and “Star Kid” on May 1, and “Flubber” on May 5.

Netflix will debut the new animated series “Spirit Riding Free” from Dreamworks Animation on May 5. The series, based on the Oscar-nominated feature “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” follows the journey of a 12-year-old girl named Lucky who befriends a wild mustang whom she aptly names Spirit. With her two best friends (and their horses) by her side, Lucky and her friends explore a world filled with endless rides, magnificent horses and and never ending fun.

Also on Netflix this month: “Happy Feet” (May 1) and “Marvel’s Doctor Strange” (May 30).

On Blu-ray

Arriving on Blu-ray and DVD in May are some family-friendly movies worth checking out. The teenage drama “The Space Between Us” releases on Blu-ray May 16, or you can catch it on digital starting May 2. The controversial movie “A Dog’s Purpose” also hits Blu-ray May 2 and can be rented through Redbox starting May 30. The animated film “Rock Dog” arrives on Blu-ray and lands in Redbox May 23.

In theaters

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” comes to the big screen nationwide May 19, and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” sets sail on May 26.

Sensory-friendly showings

See "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2" at 10 a.m. May 6 at NCG Cinema in Spartanburg. The sensory-friendly showing is $6. For details, visit ncgmovies.com/spartanburg.

Get ready for summer movies in June

Regal Cinemas will once again offer its popular Summer Movie Express. Family films rated G or PG will be screened at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting June 6 for $1 admission, but it’s first-come, first-serve, so make sure you get there early to guarantee a seat.

Showings will be held at Regal Hollywood Stadium 20 & RPX – Greenville and Regal Cherrydale Stadium 16 in Greenville, Regal Simpsonville Stadium 14 & IMAX in Simpsonville, and Regal Spartan Stadium 16 in Spartanburg.

Both movies play on both days. The following schedule applies to all area theaters:

  • June 6 – 7: “Kung Fu Panda 3” and “Ice Age: Collision Course”
  • June 13 – 14: “Trolls” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked”
  • June 20 – 21: “Monster Trucks” and “Penguins of Madagascar”
  • June 27 – 28: “Rio 2” and “The Boxtrolls”
  • July 4 – 5: “The Secret Life of Pets” and “Sing”
  • July 11 – 12: “Kubo and the Two Strings” and “Ratchet and Clank”
  • July 18 – 19: “The Spongebob Square Pants Movie: Sponge Out of Water” and “The Adevntures of Tin Tin”
  • July 25 – 26: “Happy Feet 2” and “Cat & Dogs 2: The Revenge of Kitty Galore”
  • Aug. 1 – 2: “Storks” and “The Lego Batman Movie”
